What is Antigen vs. PCR Testing?

There are two commonly used tests that detect the presence of a virus: antigen testing and PCR testing. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test tells the patient if they currently have the virus and are contagious. In COVID-19 tests, it looks for the presence of a genetic material of SARS-CoV-2. This test is usually done by collecting a nasal swab, throat swab, or saliva sample.

An antigen test is different mainly in the sense that it offers rapid results, sometimes available within minutes. This test is also done by collecting nasal or throat swabs or saliva samples. Antigen tests look for proteins on or within the virus itself. Like a PCR test, the antigen test tells you if you currently have the virus and if you can pass it to others. However, an antigen test may have a higher chance of producing a false negative test result.

Both PCR and antigen tests are extremely useful in detecting the presence of COVID-19. You might choose one over the other depending on your needs. For example, if you need to receive results that same day to clear a film actor to work on set, an antigen test would be the most reasonable option. If you need travel clearance for a trip you’re taking a week from now, a PCR test is a better option, and may have more accurate results.
